United by heritage and a commitment to excellence, our six cattle associations uphold Apache ranching traditions while driving the future of our cattle industry.
Strength in Tradition: Our Six Cattle Associations
The backbone of our cattle operations lies in our six local cattle associations, each with a unique history and a shared commitment to preserving Apache ranching traditions:
- R100 Registered Herd
- Ash Creek Cattle Association
- Point of Pines Cattle Association
- Slaughter Mountain Cattle Association
- T-11 Cattle Association
- Anchor Seven Cattle Association
Our Legacy
Cattle ranching has long been a cornerstone of the San Carlos Apache Tribe’s way of life. In the late 1800s, members of the Tribe began acquiring cattle, recognizing that the Reservation’s vast grasslands were ideal for grazing. By the 1950s, over 20,000 head of cattle roamed our lands, and San Carlos was known for producing some of the best Hereford cattle in the region. However, due to economic shifts, drought, aging infrastructure, and external competition, the industry faced a decline.
Despite these challenges, our determination has remained steadfast. Today, the San Carlos Apache Tribe is actively working to rebuild our cattle industry through strategic investments, improved range management, and a commitment to passing down traditional ranching knowledge to the next generation.
